What are Dolch Words?

First grade Dolch sight words are a list of common words that first graders are expected to be able to recognize on sight. The list was first compiled by Dr. Edward William Dolch, a professor of education at the University of Illinois, in the 1930s. Since then, it has been widely used by teachers and students of the English language. The Dolch sight words are divided by grade levels: pre-primer, primer, and first grade, second grade, and third grade. There is also a Dolch sight word list of nouns commonly found in literature.

What are Fry Sight Words?

The Fry sight words list includes 1,000 words compiled by Dr. Edward Fry. These words account for about 90% of all words in a typical book, newspaper, or magazine.

Do 4th graders still need to learn sight words?

Although it may seem that only young kids need to learn high frequency words, or sight words, actually children of all ages should be introduced to common sight words.

On the Fry sight word list, there are 1,000 sight words that children should know how to read. So once your child masters the first four lists, they can begin working on the 5th 100 Fry sight word list, which is what is usually taught in the 5th grade.

What words are on the fourth grade Dolch list?

There is not a fourth grade Dolch list, since the list ends in third grade. However, your child should know how to read and also spell all of these words in 4th grade.

The easiest way to assess your child is to download each list and have your child read the words. Then create a list of words they don't know and have them work on them.

Also, don't forget to check their knowledge of the Dolch nouns list, which is a separate list of nouns commonly found in books.

Tips for teaching sight words:

Flash cards- have your child make flash cards with the sight words to improve their word recognition.

Alphabetical Order Games- write down the words and see how quickly your child can put them in alphabetical order.

Spelling Practice- Call out a word and have your child spell them.

Vocabulary instruction- Use the sight words list to introduce new vocabulary words to your fourth grader.
